The joke had it right

Every CPAP forum lands on the same line: you strap in at night and you're a fighter pilot. Then the lights come on and you're a patient in beige plastic.

Sleep apnea runs deep in the military and veteran community, and the gear that treats it should look like something you chose. So we're building the mask the joke was always about.

Real mask underneath

The RT-1 uses the same architecture as the mask you wear tonight: rigid frame, medical silicone cushion, standard hose, sized cushions. The flight-gear details carry their weight. The comms housing is the CO2 vent array. The bayonet fittings are low-profile so nothing presses into your pillow. Everything metal-looking is molded polymer except the chin swivel, because sleepable masks live under 100 grams.

CPAP masks are Class II medical devices. The RT-1 is being developed with an FDA-registered mask manufacturer toward 510(k) clearance, and we will not sell a mask before it is cleared. Masks are prescription devices in the US; at launch we verify prescriptions the same way the major online CPAP retailers do.

Is this a real medical device?
It will be. CPAP masks are Class II devices; the RT-1 is being developed toward FDA 510(k) clearance with an established mask manufacturer. We will not sell a mask before it is cleared.
Is that a photo of the finished mask?
It's a concept render of the design direction. The production mask will differ where sleep comfort and safety testing demand it, and the waitlist sees every iteration first.
